Nicholas Lombardo
Founder / Systems & Radar Engineering
@Bardobros
Founded the lab and works across every project in it. Radar systems engineer by trade, on production defense software during the day and on the lab's projects the rest of the time.
- Quantum computing
- Radar & sensors
- Systems design
- AI agents
At the lab
- Runs the lab and decides what gets built next
- Primary engineer on HHG, the Conductor, and Earth's Tech Tree
- Contributing developer on Nocturn, the live tracking and data fusion platform: shared type and policy contracts, the country focus and daily reporting subsystems covering roughly 240 countries, and CesiumJS map rendering
- Systems architecture, requirements, and verification across every project in the lab
Professional experience
Radar Control Processor Systems Engineer
May 2021 to presentLockheed Martin, Rotary and Mission Systems
AEGIS SPY-7 Radar Control Processor
- Designs, builds, and tests the Radar Control Processor for the AEGIS SPY-7 radar, working hands on inside the production radar code base
- Develops and debugs C++ across the radar code base on Linux, using Eclipse and Git for version control and collaborative development
- Builds automation frameworks for radar test, data collection, and verification, cutting manual effort out of Element Integration & Test
- Implements and tunes system algorithms, validating radar behavior against modeled requirements in MATLAB and in house analysis tools
- Applies AI and ML techniques inside analysis and automation workflows to speed up debugging and anomaly detection across large radar data sets
- Leads Element I&T: system checkout, integration, and troubleshooting through to customer sell off
Radar Engineering, ASEV
Lockheed Martin, Rotary and Mission Systems
SPY-7 Aegis sea based radar for Japan
- Wrote Python and MATLAB tooling to automate radar data collection and analysis so engineers could validate performance against modeled requirements
- Translated high level objectives into System Requirement Specifications, defining measurable parameters for radar modes, tracking algorithms, and interface behavior
- Led the stand up of a new lab: system checkout, testing, verification, progress tracking, and hands on operations in a Linux environment
- Authored and maintained Requirement Traceability Matrices in IBM DOORS and DOORS Next Gen
- Resolved over 500 Software Trouble Reports and authored 250 new issues found through Model Driven Test
- Served as lead for model driven testing, keeping PIF milestones on schedule and the radar demo ready for customer sell off
Independent Research & Development
Lockheed Martin, Rotary and Mission Systems
- Designed and documented system architecture for SPY-7 and IRAD prototype systems with principal engineers, decomposing functional flow into hardware, software, and interface components
- Defined data and signal interface boundaries between radar subsystems, power systems, and software control modules, contributing to Interface Control Document creation
- Ran architecture trade studies and design reviews on scalability, modularity, and performance across mission environments
- Used SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Simulink for mechanical and system modeling, with tolerance analysis and structural checks against MIL-STD-810
Control Account Manager, SPY-7 Radar Control
Lockheed Martin, Rotary and Mission Systems
- Reorganized a 50+ person team to absorb 30 person growth, working through change management, risk assessment, and scaling
- Ran risk assessments and internal investigations on team efficiency, implementing fixes that saved over $6M annually
- Built and secured approval for a $150M+ Basis of Estimate covering the full Period of Performance, and led the Baseline Change Request behind it
- Tracked and reported progress in PM Compass, JIRA, Confluence, Tableau, and ROADS, presenting monthly to stakeholders
Lockheed Martin Quantum Team
Lockheed Martin
- Selected to build quantum circuits in Qiskit, exploring quantum machine learning such as Quantum Circuit Born Machines for radar and defense applications
Military service
Sergeant (E-5), Combat Veteran
Feb 2019 to Nov 2019U.S. Army
Somalia deployment
- Base defense operations in the Horn of Africa inside an Active Combat Zone, running proactive patrolling and reconnaissance to secure cargo and equipment
- Awarded the Combat Action Badge for actions in defense of Baledogle Airfield
Counter-Fire Radar Specialist, NCO (E-5)
Oct 2015 to Oct 2022New Jersey Army National Guard
- Maintained, repaired, and operated TPQ-50 and TPQ-53 counterfire target acquisition radar systems
