CAD-to-Headset Bridge

Project name: SpatialBridge

01The research goal

CAD review is still a person hunched at a monitor, rotating a model with a mouse, while the people who need to understand the part crowd behind the chair. This project moves the review to where the part will actually live: at full scale, in the room.

The constraint that shapes everything is privacy. Engineering models are often the most sensitive files a shop owns, so the bridge runs entirely on the local network. There is no account, no upload, and no third party between the CAD seat and the headset.

02How it works

An add-in inside Inventor watches the live session and streams geometry to a small hub on the same network. Headsets, iPads, and browsers connect to the hub and get the model in real time — not an export, the actual working state, updating as the engineer works.

Review is not read-only. A reviewer measures against the real dimensions, sections the assembly, and draws markup with an Apple Pencil that lands back in the engineering workflow. The drawing set travels with the model, so the shop-floor question and the drawing that answers it are in the same place.

What the lab built

  • A live bridge out of a running Inventor session, not an export pipeline
  • Exact-measure and markup workflows a reviewer can trust for real decisions
  • Local-network-only architecture: no cloud, no account, no third party
